How To Hide Thinning Hair

We all wish we could have naturally thick, luscious hair forever, however, thinning hair is a problem many women (and men) face on the regular. There are many reasons why your hair may be thinning, including age, over-processing your hair, stress, using the incorrect products, conditions like Alopecia, and more.

If you find yourself constantly asking, “Why is my hair falling out?” and wondering how to hide thinning hair, we’ve got some answers for you.

So…what is the reason for hair loss and thinning hair?

The simplest answer is age. As we age, our hair, just like our skin, does too. Our scalp begins to produce less hairs, and the hair strands themselves get thinner. If you feel that you are too young and spritely to be experiencing hair loss, you may be performing some bad habits contributing to your thinning tresses.

So…how to hide thinning hair?

Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks for those experiencing hair loss to hide this issue.

1. Chop it off

An easy way to quickly create the illusion of thick, full hair is to snip a few inches off and add some layers. Shorter hair tends to naturally create more volume as it is not weighed down. Strategic layers can also add volume to thinning hair – request your hair stylist to add layers around your face and to leave the back fuller, to create body and volume.

2. Embrace the greys

As hair ages, it also greys, and guess what? Grey hair actually expands the hair’s cuticle, adding additional volume! If you really can’t stand those greys, however, plan to touch up your roots only once a month and add highlights every two to three weeks to keep your hair as healthy, full, and thick and possible.

3. Blow it out

Adding big volume can be achieved with a good blowout after washing your hair. The best part is, this can be done at home with one simple tool: the round brush. Using a boar bristle brush, start blow-drying damp hair by pulling section up and blow-drying in the opposite direction that the hair naturally falls. Be sure to add an additional blast of cool air for a few seconds before letting go, to set the style. You may want to warm up those arms, as this does require some extra effort and time, but trust me, it’s totally worth it!

Check out the video below, to learn how to style an epic blow-out:

4. Get some help

Hair extensions, hair toppers, and wiglets are all amazing resources to disguise thin hair and instantly add amazing length and volume. For hair that is thinning at the top of the scalp, a hair topper can be a lifesaver as they are designed to target as conceal partial hair loss. These are especially helpful for those experiencing bald spots due to alopecia. You can even combine a hair topper with Luxy Hair extensions to create that full, Victoria’s Secret model hairstyle you’ve always dreamed of! Our 220g sets are perfect for those looking to add drama and oomph to the hair. If you’d like to go even further, you can even opt for our 24″ Luxies for mermaid length hair! We recommend to check out this blog post to learn how to blend Luxies with thinner hair for a beautiful, seamless blend.

5. Products to hide thinning hair

A volumizing shampoo combats limpness and puffs up the hair to hide thinning and is a great prerequisite to that blow-out we mentioned earlier. Choose a shampoo that is alcohol and sulfate-free is as these ingredients can be very harsh on the hair and further lead to hall fallout and thinning. You can also add additional volume by working a volumizing mouse through the hair before blow drying. Again, try and stay away from ingredients you can’t pronounce, as these can weigh the hair down.

Volumized hair is all well and good, however, if your scalp is still peeking through, there are products to help further disguise this issue. Conceal scalp lines, bald spots, and thinning hair with hair building fibres that come in many different shades to instantly transform hair and create the look of ample volume. Products like Toppik are created with high grade Keratin, which is the same protein found in natural hair. These Hair Building Fibers have a natural static charge, which tightly bind to the hair to build it up. As the fibers are created with Keratin, they blend naturally and undetectably into the hair! Be careful though, there are many imitation products that use Keratin derived from plant-based materials, cotton, or rayon, which can end up looking unnatural or clumpy. When shopping for Hair Building Fibers, ensure that the Keratin has been derived from a natural wool source, as this contains a natural static charge for the most natural blend possible.

So…how do I prevent hair loss?

Now that we’ve covered how to hide thinning hair, here are some hair growth tips to preventing thinning hair and boosting hair growth.

Hair oils are our fave, as certain oils promote certain benefits to the hair. Castor Oil is rich in Vitamin E, proteins, and minerals, and has anti-microbial properties that works wonders for the hair! Not only does Castor Oil soften and moisturize the hair, it promotes blood circulation in the scalp, which can lead to faster hair growth. To use Castor Oil in your hair, apply it on scalp and run through the hair, leave it in overnight, and wash it with a mild shampoo the next day. This oil is quite thick and can be a bit difficult to wash out, however, with regular use, your hair should grow thick, moisturized, and lustrous. Here are a few of our other favourite hair oils for gorgeous hair.

Castor Oil for hair growth

Supplements like Biotin or Vitamin H are also great for promoting healthy hair, skin, and nails. You can take biotin as an extra supplement or in your daily diet – foods like egg yolk, almonds, nut butters, bananas, and whole grains are packed with biotin – be sure to eat them raw to get the full effect of this vitamin for hair growth.

Taking super hot showers, is also a big no-no when it comes to keeping you hair as healthy and thick as possible. Hot water and steam dehydrates the hair, causing brittle strands that are more prone to breakage and fall out. Instead, turn down the heat to medium, and try and rinse your hair with cold water – we know, this can be super difficult when it’s freezing cold outside, but your hair will thank you!

After showers, pat dry your hair and refrain from aggressively towel drying, as this could lead to breakage and shedding. Comb your locks with a paddle brush BEFORE showering, and refrain from brushing the hair when wet.

When choosing your hair style, keep it loose! Tight ponytails and hairstyles can put excessive tension on hair follicles, which can damage and permanently destroy them. This could even lead to traction alopecia, making hair impossible to grow back. Check out our YouTube channel for many beautiful loose hairstyle ideas.

Ahhh, February – the month of love, chocolate, and flowers. Emphasis on the chocolate.

Whether you’ve got a romantic date planned with your boo, or have a fun night out on the town planned with your girlfriends, we’ve got three cute and easy date night hairstyles lined up for you. In today’s blog post, we’ve teamed up with our ever-so-beautiful friend, Karin, to show you three date night staple hairstyles you need to try out this Valentine’s Day.

  • Big, sexy waves
  • Stacked side braid
  • Voluminous bun

Luxy Hair Clip-In Extensions

Interested in learning how to create one, or maybe all of these beautiful and easy hairstyles? Watch the tutorial below or keep scrolling for a step-by-step guide.

Big, Sexy Waves

Luxy Hair Clip-In Extensions

What you’ll need:

  • Clip-in hair extensions (optional)
  • Curling iron
  • Hairspray

1. Clip in your hair extensions (not sure how? Don’t fret, girl – we’ve got you. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial). Karin is wearing her 20″ 220g Dirty Blonde Luxies to achieve more volume and length for this look. Although this step is totally optional, it is highly recommended in order to really achieve those va-va-voom big, sexy, voluminous waves.

2. Take your beloved curling iron and start curling one side of your hair in small chunks. We recommend to curl away from your face as it helps create a more natural look.

3. Once you’re finished curling a section, pull on the curl in order to help loosen the hair – we don’t want tight pageant curls tonight, ladies.

4. Don’t forget the other side! Repeat instructions until every piece is fully curled.

5. Run your fingers through your curls to break and loosen them up.

6. Grab your hairspray, stretch your arm out and spray. We don’t want crunchy curls on date night, so distance is key. You want to spray just enough product so that your curls stay in place all night.

Voila, beautiful! You’re all done. And we must say – you look lovely.

Stacked Side Braid

Luxy Hair Clip-In Extensions

What you’ll need:

  • Clip-in hair extensions (optional)
  • A couple of clear hair elastics
  • One bobby pin

1. Clip in your hair extensions. Again, this step is totally optional but it gives you more hair to work with so you can achieve a more voluminous braid. Interested in checking out our collection? Click here

2. Bring all of your hair to one side of your face, and take a small chunk of hair and put it aside for now. We’ll get back to that one later.

3. Braid your hair in a regular three-stand braid and secure the end with a clear hair elastic.

4. Your braid should be fairly tight right now, but we want to loosen it up. Pull on the hair to fan it out.

5. Remember that chunk of hair we put aside? We’re going to bring that one back in the picture to finalize the look. Braid the hair in another regular three strand braid, and tie the two braids together at the very ends with another clear hair elastic.

6. Take a bobby pin and pin the two braids together towards the top, so they both remain secured in place.

And there you have it – our stacked braid! Looks super intricate, but only involves two easy three strand braids. Trick your date this Valentine’s Day into believing you’re a braid genius *wink*.

Voluminous Bun

Luxy Hair Clip-In Extensions

What you’ll need:

  • Clip-in hair extensions (optional)
  • Hair elastic
  • Hair brush
  • A few bobby pins
  • Hair spray

1. Clip in your hair extensions upside down (so that it pulls into an updo easier). Have we mentioned this step is optional? We personally love to clip in a few wefts when creating a bun or updo look, as it gives you so much more hair to work with. Want to see some examples? Click here.

2. Gather your hair and tie it up in a high ponytail and brush it out.

3. Gently twist your hair around the base to create a bun and secure it in place with a few bobby pins.

4. Spray hairspray to ensure any fly-aways remain in place and to hold your bun together.

Andddd you’re done! It was easy as that, and girl – you look GOOD.

Those are our top 3 go-to beautiful and easy date night hairstyles. Which look did you rock on date night – 1, 2, or 3? Let us know in the comments below!

How to Style Long Hair: Beach Waves & Messy Bun

We’ve got another special treat for you today – a blog post from the lovely Torie Bliss! Today Torie will be showing us how she styles her 24” Ombre extensions. Since she’s #hairinspo all day, every day we thought, who better? Torie, take it from here, girl!

How to Style Long Hair

How to Style Long Hair

Who doesn’t love long hair?

I’m all about loooong luscious locks – I love to look at them, style them, pretty much anything to do with long hair is my #hairgoals. Which is exactly why I love my Ombre Blonde Luxy Hair extensions so much. My hair is already quite long, but this set gives me a couple of extra inches and wonderful thickness.

If you have long hair (or are using hair extensions to achieve long hair), you’ll know that it’s not as easy to style as some may think. That’s why I’ve come up with the perfect long hair style: beachy waves and a half up messy bun.

Beachy waves are the perfect no-fuss hairstyle because they are meant to look lived-in. Add in a super easy messy bun, and you’ve got a match made in long hair heaven. I also have a trick to make your messy bun come out the same every. single. time. Do I have you hooked yet? Let’s get this party started!

If you’re using hair extensions, you can go ahead and clip them in first.

How I clip in my Luxy Hair Extensions:

  1. First, add the first weft about 1/2 inch above the base of your hair line
  2. Then, proceed to clip each 2 clip weft on alternating sides
  3. Place the 3 clip wefts on a separate layer
  4. Add in the four clip wefts
  5. Then, clip 2 one clip wefts on each side of your head
  6. Finally, add the last one clip weft to the crown of your head.

For step by step video and photo instructions, you can check out this blog post on how to clip in Luxy Hair extensions!

How to: Beachy Waves for Long Hair

Tip from Torie: When choosing an iron for creating beach waves, make sure to use a barrel that is a uniform width from top to bottom, no tapering.

1. Split your hair into two equal section and pull it to the front

How to Style Long Hair

2. Take different sized sections from the original two sections are start making waves

How to Style Long Hair

3. Wrap each section away from your face and leave a few inches straight at the bottom

How to Style Long Hair

4. Release the curl off the iron into your hand and give it a little scrunch as it cools

Tip from Torie: This is a really important step – if you drop the curl hot, your long hair will weigh down the wave.

5. Repeat each of these steps with each section

6. Finish with a bit of texture spray and low-hold hairspray!

How to: Messy Bun for Long Hair

If you want to take your hairstyle to the next level, a half-up messy bun is the perfect way to do it! This adds an extra element to your style, and the longer the hair, the more volume you can create.

How to Style Long Hair

1. Leave a few sections out around your face to soften the style and make it more whimsical!

2. Part a section of hair and start wrapping it into a ponytail.

How to Style Long Hair

3. On the final wrap, don’t pull your hair all the way through – leave a loop bun.

How to Style Long Hair

4. While holding the bun with one hand, pinch and pull at the base of the ponytail to give it volume and texture.

For the next few steps, you are going to be using the hair from the tail end of the ponytail

How to Style Long Hair

5. Take a section from the left part of the ponytail and twist it back towards the bun.

How to Style Long Hair

6. Working your way up and down the twist, pinch and pull at it to make it fluffy.

How to Style Long Hair

7. Take the twist and drape it over the base of the bun and pin into place

Best Hairstyles for Different Face Shapes

Have you ever gone into a hair salon with a photo of your favorite celebrity and asked for their exact haircut, only to leave the salon wondering why those bangs that looked so beautiful on Gigi Hadid just don’t give your own face that certain “Je ne sais quoi”??

Best hairstyles for different face shapes

Well, dear friends, it’s not just because Gigi has a team of stylists at her beck and call, it’s probably because bangs just don’t suit your face shape…and that’s okay! We’re here to help you figure out the best hairstyles for your face shape, so you can rock runway worthy ‘dos everyday even without your own personal hair stylist.

Determining your face shape

At this point you may be asking, ‘but what is my face shape?!’ The most common mistake most people make when trying to determine their face shape is thinking that their faces are simply round. If I asked you to draw a picture of a face right now, the shape of the face will likely be either round or oval, but there’s so much more to it than that. When determining your face shape, you should be looking at your hairline, width and length of your face, and jawline.

The easiest way to know what facial shape you are is to pull your hair back, take an eyeliner or lip pencil, look in the mirror, and trace the outline of your face. Then, compare the outline with the handy guide below. (Bonus points if you leave the outline of your face on your mirror to scare your friends.)

What is my face shape?

Best Hairstyles For Oval Faces

A face shape is considered oval if the length is longer than the width, and the jawline is only slightly narrower than the hairline, which is gently rounded. An oval face shape has no prominent points. Some celebs you may recognize with an oval face include Jessica Alba, Rihanna, and Bella Hadid.

best hairstyles for oval face shapes

If you have an oval face shape, you’re in luck! This shape is considered to be most versatile for hairstyles, as it is usually quite well-balanced and evenly proportioned, so feel free to experiment.

Dos: Try out that RiRi pixie cut, take a risk with bangs, layer up your hair, or rock a middle part. The best hairstyles for oval faces include styles that keep your hair away from your face, exposing your best features. Side-swept bangs also look great on those with oval faces to frame your face as well as high-fashion, slicked-back looks, like the one below. Updos are super easy to create on oval shaped faces, as you do not need to overcompensate a certain side or think too hard about softening certain features.

Hairstyles for oval face

Don’ts: When styling an oval face shape, try to keep the face as clear as possible. Steer clear of heavy bangs, as this could make your face appear shorter, and avoid hairstyles that are one length, as this could make your face appear longer. If you’re wearing your hair down, be sure to have either one or both sides tucked behind your ear showing off your cheekbones and beautiful face shape.

Best Hairstyles for Heart Shaped Faces

Just like a heart that you would draw out, a heart shaped face is wider at the hairline and temples and tapers to a small, narrow chin, that is slightly pointed. Your forehead may be a prominent feature usually, if you have a heart shaped face, you probably also have killer cheekbones. Yay! Think Tyra Banks, Reese Witherspoon, and our very own Mimi Ikonn, who all have stunning heart shaped faces.

best hairstyles for heart shaped faces

Do’s: When choosing hairstyles for a heart shaped face, you can either choose to accentuate your face shape, or to make the bottom half of your face look wider. If you choose to accentuate your face’s tapered shape, pull your hair up into a high top knot, or space buns like below, if you’re feeling daring. A deep side part with loose curls looks super elegant and shows off that beautiful, feminine face shape as well. If you’re looking to balance your features, shoulder length hair tends to look best, as this adds volume around the bottom of your faec, creating the illusion of a wider jawline.

Hairstyles for heart shaped faces

Don’ts: A “true” heart shaped face has a widow’s peak. If you have one, try and avoid forcing a middle part. Chances are, one side of your hair will part as you’d like it to and one side will have a mind of its own. Instead, part your hair slightly off centre to whichever side your hair naturally falls over the widow’s peak to avoid any hair woes. Also, skip out on the short bangs as these could make your chin look super narrow, and avoid short bobs.

Hairstyles for square faces

Square shaped faces are quite wide, and the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are almost the same width. The strong jawline is a prominent feature of square shaped faces, like on Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Wilde, and square faced girls usually photograph well, so congrats!

Do’s: When choosing a hairstyle for a square shaped face, you can either choose to accentuate the square-ness of your face or soften your strong jawline. If you’d like to enhance your face shape, go for some blunt bangs or a short bob to really show off that strong jawline. If you’d like to de-enhance the square-ness, try some soft, wispy bangs falling to the side to create diagonal lines and soften the lines on your face, or wear your hair straight and long with some layers to draw the eyes down and add length to your face.

Long hair with extensions

…Ummm. Maybe not that long.

Dont’s: Avoid overly solid bangs or blunt hairstyles, as this could accentuate the angles on your face even more. Also, any severe, slicked back looks should also be avoided, if you are trying to soften your face shape. Curls could also widen your face, so opt to wear your hair in either loose waves or straight. Here’s a great tutorial to achieving loose, boho waves:

Hairstyles for round faces

Round shaped faces are pretty much the same in width and length, with no prominent angles or corners. If you have a round face, do not fret! Round faces are usually “baby-faces,” which means you look younger, and can opt for more youthful styles. Celebs like Kirsten Dunst, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Miranda Kerr are all perfect examples of round-faced gals.

Do’s: When styling a rounder face, your main goal is to elongate the face and make it appear more oval. A quick trick to doing this is to always leave a little piece of hair untucked on one side of your face. This will visually stop the width of your face and tricks the eye into thinking your face is narrower. Try a deep side part to also create more angles to a round face, or pull your hair up into a high pony to elongate the face. If you’re feeling especially daring, a short pixie cut with volume at the top looks fabulous on round face shapes, as it adds texture and angles, without looking harsh. Check out the tutorial below to learn how to create beautiful high ponytails with extensions.

Don’ts: A common mistake for round-faced girls is to hide their face behind lots of hair. This actually ends up accentuating the wide face! Instead, go for medium length hair with long, face framing bangs, and keep the texture smooth and sleek. Avoid soft, wispy bangs, as this can further accentuate the softness of your features. Instead, opt for side swept bangs or bold, full moon bangs.

Hairstyles for long faces

The easiest way to describe a long face shape is that it’s an oval face shape…just longer. Think Sarah Jessica Parker, Liv Tyler, and Hilary Swank.

Do’s: The main goal here is to make your face appear wider than it is. So how do we achieve this? Curls! Why do you think Carrie Bradshaw always looked so fabulous? Okay, so she had a drool-worth closet filled with clothes by couture designers, but also, she let her natural curls run loose and wild, opening up her face shape.

Curly hair on long face shape

Flat-iron waves are a great way to achieve big curls and waves for a super widening effect. Here’s a tutorial on how to achieve this. You want the widest part of your waves to hit around the area of your cheekbone, to create the illusion of a wider face. A good old-fashioned blowout is also a quick, simply way to achieve more width, like in this tutorial. Whatever hairstyle you go for, remember your looking for width rather than length.

Don’ts: Keeping with the “wider not longer” rule, avoid hair that is too far past mid-length, as this seriously lengthens the face. Also, avoid one-length hair or super sleek looks that can also make your face look longer.

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: 6 Tips

Struggle with oily hair?

How to get rid of oily hair

We totally get it. There’s nothing more annoying than taking a nice cleansing and refreshing shower, and waking up the following day and wondering why your hair is oily enough to fry an egg.

Looking for some quick and easy tips on how to get rid of oily hair? Look no further – we have your back. In today’s blog post, we’ll walk you through our top 6 tips on how to get rid of oily and greasy hair.

Why is my hair so oily, anyway?

First, we must learn why it is that our hair is producing these oils because, don’t get us wrong – natural oils in the hair is common and vital to ensuring healthy and strong hair. What’s going on up there, you ask? Let’s walk through a quick science lesson on what our hair is doing, and what it means to have oily hair.

This, beautiful friends, is what goes on behind the scenes of our hair. #BTS

how to get rid of oily hair

The star of the show here is our sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are glands in your skin that release sebum, which is a lubricating oil. These glands are located all over your body, with the exception of a few areas (like hands and feet), and are found connected with your hair follicles. Wondering why you always have oily hair? Well, we have (semi)good news – your sebaceous glands are alive, well, and active!

The bad news? Overreactive sebaceous glands means you may experience oily hair, which can be frustrating and difficult to deal with. As previously mentioned, however, we are here to help. Here is tip number one on how to prevent oily hair:

1. Determine Your Hair Wash Cycle

Contrary to popular belief, for someone who has naturally oily hair, it’s actually best to not wash your hair as often as you may think. Shocker, right? Most people tend to leap straight for the shampoo and assume they’re simply due for another shower when they feel their hair is oily. Washing your hair every day or even every other day, however, will result in your hair producing more oil because it’s trying to compensate for the oil lost. Basically, your sebaceous glands are confused.

It will take time to train your hair to get used to your new wash cycle, but with time, you will start to see results. We recommend to try and reduce your hair wash cycle to only 2 or 3 (at the very most) washes per week.

When washing your hair, start off with warm water when washing so that it opens up your pores and cleanses, and when it comes time to rinse, turn the knob down and opt for cooler water so that your pores close.

Another great tip: minimize the use of conditioner. If you’re one to slather on the conditioner, try cutting it back to just a small dollop or even skip it a few times each shower session to minimize oil build up, as it can active oil production quicker. The proper way to use conditioner, actually, is not at the roots but all throughout the length of the hair, because that is where the hair needs to be conditioned the most. The natural oils will take care of moisturizing the roots.

Look, we know it can be tough leaving the house when your hair feels and looks oily, which is why we’ve created this tutorial on 3 easy hairstyles for oily hair – you’re welcome! Check it out by watching this video:

2. Curls > Straight Hair

Have you ever noticed that you can usually go a day or two longer without washing your hair if you’ve curled it? That is no coincidence, my friend.

How to get rid of oily hair

If your hair lays flat and you’re guilty for straightening it often, try to lay low on the straightening products as the closer your hair is to your head and the straighter it is, the more oil it comes in contact with, and the easier it is for the oil to make its way down your hair.

Check out our tutorial here on how curl your hair in 5 different and easy ways.

3. Keep Your Hands Off Your Hair

Girl, stop.

You know how they say a kiss is likely more clean than shaking hands with someone? It’s true – your hands are constantly touching multiple things throughout the day and although we trust your portable Purell hand sanitizer game is strong, there are still plenty of germs and oils on your hands that you do not want to transfer over to your hair. The twirling of hair or the brushing of your hair back that you subconsciously do throughout the day all contribute to the oil build-up you see in your hair. If you struggle keeping your hands away from your hair throughout the day, try tying it up in a bun at the beginning of the day so there are no temptations.

If you’re in need of some bun inspo, check out this tutorial we created on 3 Cute & Easy Messy Buns.

4. Dry Shampoo & Alternatives

If you haven’t heard of dry shampoo yet, well… You’ve been missing out.

Dry shampoo is a loved product in the Luxy Hair office. There are so many benefits to it, but the most obvious one is that it soaks up the oil in your hair and helps give the illusion of freshly washed hair, without the inconvenience and time it takes to actually wash your hair (because you’re on that 2-3 days a week wash cycle, right?).

What are the other cool benefits of dry shampoo, you ask? It can also act as a texturizing spray and help provide extra volume at the roots, if you’re trying to create a more voluminous hair style.

If your wallet is tight but you still want to get in on the dry shampoo hype, try baby powder – it acts the same way, soaking up excess oil and adding texture and volume to the roots of your hair. Be sure to only use a small amount, and don’t forget to massage it in well!

5. Reduce the Use of Hair Products

We understand that sometimes you may have to use a little bit of hairspray or mousse to perfect that curl or updo, but remember – many hair styling products like gels, mousses, and creams contain oils and other ingredients that can contribute to the buildup of hair oil. We recommend to minimize the use of these products and when you do use them, be sure to rinse your hair at the end of the day.

If you’re looking for some heat-free and product-free hairstyles that are quick and easy to do, check out our tutorial below.

6. Food, Food, Food

It’s no surprise that the foods we consume will have a direct effect on the reason why we experience oily hair. Carbohydrates and processed foods can increase the amount of oil that our sebaceous glands produce, so we recommend to stay away from fried foods, sugar, and refined carbohydrates to ensure that a good balance of sebum is being produced in your hair.

Hair Extensions Myths: Common Misconceptions

In this blog post, we’re talking all about hair extensions and some common misconceptions!

This blog post should be really helpful if you’re not familiar with hair extensions, or if you’re in the market for some new clip-in hair extensions, but you’re still on edge about them. Whether you’ve had a bad experience before, if you are a first-time hair extensions buyer, or simply heard some bad things about hair extensions in general – keep reading or watch this video:

Hair Extensions Myth #1:

Hair extensions will leave your hair damaged, broken, and extremely thin.

That is definitely not the case with clip-in hair extensions! They don’t pull out your hair because you take them out at night, and only wear them when you want to enhance the length and thickness of your hair. If clipped in properly, clip-in hair extensions cause absolutely no damage to your hair.

best clip in hair extensions

There are different hair extension application methods out there, about which you should do thorough research prior to committing. Out of all – skin wefting, micro-linking, tape-ins or keratin fusion – clip-in hair extensions are safest, and fastest way to get longer, thicker hair. Other permanent hair extensions may cause some damage to your hair over a long period of time, whereas temporary methods like clip-ins are worn on a selective basis and allow your hair to ‘breathe’ and rest when the extensions aren’t being worn.

If you are experiencing alopecia, we strongly suggest to consult your healthcare professional for advice on whether wearing hair extensions is right for you.

Hair Extensions Myth #2:

Hair extensions won’t blend in.

Another common misconception is that the hair extensions won’t blend in. The thing is – if you choose the right set of hair extensions for your hair type, and practice clipping them in – the extensions will blend in seamlessly with your hair. Here are just a few different ways on how to properly clip-in hair extensions:

How to clip-in hair extensions:

How to clip-in hair extensions with short hair:

With Luxy Hair clip-in hair extensions in particular, there are 3 different weights you can select from. The 120g sets are designed for those who have thin hair and not a lot of it. The 160g sets are designed for those who have an average amount of hair, but are looking to add more length and volume while still maintaining a natural look. The 220g sets are designed for those who have thick hair, a lot of hair, blunt haircuts or short hair.

It’s really important to choose the set according to your hair for an ideal and seamless blend, because that way – nobody will be able to tell that you’re wearing extensions!

Hair Extensions Myth #3:

The extension tracks will show.

If they are clipped in properly, these hair extensions will not be visible at all, even if you move around a lot! The trick is to clip them in in your ‘safe’ zone, below your eyebrow line, and have enough hair to cover the wefts. Click here to read a great blog post on how to blend hair extensions with thin hair (which is actually applicable to everybody!).

Hair Extensions Myth #4:

Extra hair will weigh you down and give you headaches.

Of course it will feel a bit heavier than normal, because you are clipping something into your hair. If you clip in 220 grams of hair extensions, it will feel exactly 220 grams heavier! If you had that much hair naturally, that’s how it would feel, because the actual tracks and clips of Luxy Hair extensions are super lightweight and comfortable. If you are a first time extensions wearer, you definitely get used to how hair extensions feel in your head and you start not even noticing them after a little while.

Some people may get headaches if they have super sensitive scalps – but those are the people who also may get headaches from even tying a regular ponytail too tight.

The trick to not get any headaches when wearing clip-in hair extensions is to clip them in slightly lower on your hair, rather than right at the scalp.

how to properly put in extensions

That way, there is more lenience on your scalp. Luxy Hair extensions have a silicone grip on every single clip, so you can be sure that they won’t slide down further and will securely stay in your hair. For extra support, though, you can also tease the hair a little bit below of where you want to clip in the weft.

Hair Extensions Myth #5:

Hair extensions tangle and are high maintenance.

Clip-in hair extensions do not need professional salon care! You can take good care of your set yourself, just as you would with your own hair. Since hair extensions aren’t attached to your scalp, they don’t get oily – and therefore, they don’t even need to be washed that often. They only need to be washed every 15-20 wears when there is a significant buildup of hairspray or other hair products. You can learn how to wash clip-in hair extensions yourself by reading this post. Watch this helpful video on how to generally take care of your hair extensions and grant them a long and happy life:

Of course, all hair extensions – and hair, for that matter – are prone to some tangling. The extent to which the hair tangles depends on the quality of the hair extensions and also how well you take care of them. If the extensions are made of remy human hair and are of Chinese origin, there should be minimal tangling that occurs naturally.

If your own hair is prone to tangling, then it may naturally cause the extensions to tangle with it – but as long as you brush the hair out periodically, just like you would with your own hair, this should not be an issue at all. We’ve written a great blog post on why your hair tangles and how to prevent it: click here to check it out!
