Hair Extensions Myths: Common Misconceptions

In this blog post, we’re talking all about hair extensions and some common misconceptions!

This blog post should be really helpful if you’re not familiar with hair extensions, or if you’re in the market for some new clip-in hair extensions, but you’re still on edge about them. Whether you’ve had a bad experience before, if you are a first-time hair extensions buyer, or simply heard some bad things about hair extensions in general – keep reading or watch this video:

Hair Extensions Myth #1:

Hair extensions will leave your hair damaged, broken, and extremely thin.

That is definitely not the case with clip-in hair extensions! They don’t pull out your hair because you take them out at night, and only wear them when you want to enhance the length and thickness of your hair. If clipped in properly, clip-in hair extensions cause absolutely no damage to your hair.

best clip in hair extensions

There are different hair extension application methods out there, about which you should do thorough research prior to committing. Out of all – skin wefting, micro-linking, tape-ins or keratin fusion – clip-in hair extensions are safest, and fastest way to get longer, thicker hair. Other permanent hair extensions may cause some damage to your hair over a long period of time, whereas temporary methods like clip-ins are worn on a selective basis and allow your hair to ‘breathe’ and rest when the extensions aren’t being worn.

If you are experiencing alopecia, we strongly suggest to consult your healthcare professional for advice on whether wearing hair extensions is right for you.

Hair Extensions Myth #2:

Hair extensions won’t blend in.

Another common misconception is that the hair extensions won’t blend in. The thing is – if you choose the right set of hair extensions for your hair type, and practice clipping them in – the extensions will blend in seamlessly with your hair. Here are just a few different ways on how to properly clip-in hair extensions:

How to clip-in hair extensions:

How to clip-in hair extensions with short hair:

With Luxy Hair clip-in hair extensions in particular, there are 3 different weights you can select from. The 120g sets are designed for those who have thin hair and not a lot of it. The 160g sets are designed for those who have an average amount of hair, but are looking to add more length and volume while still maintaining a natural look. The 220g sets are designed for those who have thick hair, a lot of hair, blunt haircuts or short hair.

It’s really important to choose the set according to your hair for an ideal and seamless blend, because that way – nobody will be able to tell that you’re wearing extensions!

Hair Extensions Myth #3:

The extension tracks will show.

If they are clipped in properly, these hair extensions will not be visible at all, even if you move around a lot! The trick is to clip them in in your ‘safe’ zone, below your eyebrow line, and have enough hair to cover the wefts. Click here to read a great blog post on how to blend hair extensions with thin hair (which is actually applicable to everybody!).

Hair Extensions Myth #4:

Extra hair will weigh you down and give you headaches.

Of course it will feel a bit heavier than normal, because you are clipping something into your hair. If you clip in 220 grams of hair extensions, it will feel exactly 220 grams heavier! If you had that much hair naturally, that’s how it would feel, because the actual tracks and clips of Luxy Hair extensions are super lightweight and comfortable. If you are a first time extensions wearer, you definitely get used to how hair extensions feel in your head and you start not even noticing them after a little while.

Some people may get headaches if they have super sensitive scalps – but those are the people who also may get headaches from even tying a regular ponytail too tight.

The trick to not get any headaches when wearing clip-in hair extensions is to clip them in slightly lower on your hair, rather than right at the scalp.

how to properly put in extensions

That way, there is more lenience on your scalp. Luxy Hair extensions have a silicone grip on every single clip, so you can be sure that they won’t slide down further and will securely stay in your hair. For extra support, though, you can also tease the hair a little bit below of where you want to clip in the weft.

Hair Extensions Myth #5:

Hair extensions tangle and are high maintenance.

Clip-in hair extensions do not need professional salon care! You can take good care of your set yourself, just as you would with your own hair. Since hair extensions aren’t attached to your scalp, they don’t get oily – and therefore, they don’t even need to be washed that often. They only need to be washed every 15-20 wears when there is a significant buildup of hairspray or other hair products. You can learn how to wash clip-in hair extensions yourself by reading this post. Watch this helpful video on how to generally take care of your hair extensions and grant them a long and happy life:

Of course, all hair extensions – and hair, for that matter – are prone to some tangling. The extent to which the hair tangles depends on the quality of the hair extensions and also how well you take care of them. If the extensions are made of remy human hair and are of Chinese origin, there should be minimal tangling that occurs naturally.

If your own hair is prone to tangling, then it may naturally cause the extensions to tangle with it – but as long as you brush the hair out periodically, just like you would with your own hair, this should not be an issue at all. We’ve written a great blog post on why your hair tangles and how to prevent it: click here to check it out!

Lob and Blunt Cut: How To Blend Hair Extensions

If you have a lob haircut, or a short blunt haircut, you may find that blending in hair extensions is a bit challenging. In this blog post, we will share some tips and tricks with you that will allow you to blend in hair extensions with your blunt haircut or a lob – seamlessly.

Watch the video below or scroll down to text instructions to see what the tricks are!

Hair Extensions For Short Hair

First things first – if you have short hair and are looking to purchase clip-in hair extensions, we strongly recommend getting a thick set (our 220 gram collection), even if your hair is not that thick. Why, you ask? Because you want your hair extensions to look natural and blend in seamlessly. In order for that to happen with short hair, or any blunt haircut, you need to ensure that you have enough hair extensions to make the transition from your hair to the rest of the extensions unnoticeable. Otherwise, it will look like this…

…and we definitely don’t want that. You can see that in the above photo, there are simply not enough wefts (or they are not thick enough) for the short, blunt haircut. Instead, we want to achieve a before and after transformation like this:

Here, 220g Ash Blonde Luxy Hair extensions were used (slightly cut and toned – check out the full video tutorial on how to tone, cut, and blend hair extensions by clicking here). Or this:

Some new tricks we’re showing in this week’s video (which you can watch above) contain some new tips and tricks we’d love to share with you.

Braid the bottom layer

One of the biggest giveaways that you are wearing hair extensions are those bottom layers of your own hair that show underneath the extensions. To avoid this, section the bottom of your hair (from the middle of your ear to ear), braid it, and pin it securely against your head.

blending hair extensions with a blunt haircut

This does two things:

– Hides the short layers of your own hair, which will allow you to move freely and not have to constantly touch your hair to hide them

– Removes some of the ‘bluntness’ of the haircut and allows for the wefts to be the ‘base’ of your hair, since you will be clipping the wefts directly over this pinned braid. Just like this:

extensions for a lob

Stack your wefts

A really neat trick when wearing extensions, is to stack the wefts on top of each other. You may have seen the technique in this Instagram video, where 2 shades of Luxy Hair extensions were stacked to create more color dimension – but of course, this trick can be done with just one shade of extensions as well.

What this does is creates more volume, but you are still technically clipping in 1 weft onto your actual hair. This is a great way to hide some of that bluntness in your haircut as well.

Wave your hair and extensions together

Especially if the colour match of your extensions isn’t 100% ideal, hair extensions in general blend in a lot better when they are waved or curled with your own hair, instead of wearing them straight. This is especially applicable to everyone who has really thick hair, or a blunt haircut.

The proper way to do this is to take the end of your own hair along with the hair extensions, and curl it as one. That way when you brush it out, it flows in seamlessly into the extensions.

Frizzy Hair Blowout Routine + How To Blend Hair Extensions With Layered Hair

This blog post is basically this:

Before and after transformation | Frizzy Hair Blowout | Clip In Hair Extensions

AKA: how to turn frizzy hair into gorgeous, silky smooth locks. We are so fortunate to have Leyla show us her blowout routine on her naturally wavy/curly and frizzy hair. I mean, that transformation!! If you want to learn how to style frizzy hair and how to blend in hair extensions with layered hair, watch the following video or scroll down for directions.

How To Blowdry Frizzy Hair

If you have naturally frizzy hair, you know how essential it is for your happiness to learn how to style it on a daily basis. Don’t get us wrong – we’re all for embracing your natural hair and loving your curls, and if you’re also about that, be sure to check out our numerous hair tutorials on how to style naturally curly hair, wavy hair and frizzy hair. BUT… on days when you want to feel that silky smoothness of your hair, here are the tips you need to follow to get the perfect blowout.

Air dry first.

Start with your hair 90% air dried. There are 2 reasons for this: firstly, the blowout will just look that much better. And secondly, it’s far less damaging to your hair – since you’re applying heat from the blow dryer, the hair will need much less heat when it’s partially dried as opposed to having it soaking wet. Basic TLC, my friends! Just don’t blow dry your hair when it’s still dripping wet – promise?

Section that hair.

Section your entire head in very small, manageable sections. Yes, this is time consuming. Yes, this seems like a lot of extra work. But do you want a kickass blowout, or not?! If yes, then please trust us when we say the results are so worth it when you blow dry one small and manageable section at a time. That way, the heat from the nozzle will be transferred evenly throughout, giving that silky smooth finish. Bonus: talk about a killer arm workout 😉

Get a blow dryer with a nozzle that looks like one below. It will concentrate the hot hair and give you the ultimate blowout. how to get the perfect blowout

The right brush.

Get a large round brush that is ceramic. The heat will transfer to it and act as a straightener at the same time. Leyla used a 3 and a half inch ceramic brush, and you can purchase one at any drug store, beauty supply store or a hair salon!

    But that’s not all…

How To Blend Hair Extensions With Layered Hair

If you want to glam it up a step further, clip in your Luxy Hair extensions to make your hair longer and fuller than ever before. Literally, this is the easiest way to ‘grow’ long hair fast without having to actually grow it, haha. Just check out the result yourself:

If you have layered hair, it may be a little difficult to blend in clip-in hair extensions when the hair is straight, because the extensions are all one length – 20 inches. So, there are two ways to do it:

    a) Trim them by a professional hairstylist to blend with your own haircut and style

    b) Wave the extensions with your own hair, which is how Leyla does it in the video. Make sure to watch her technique in the video above to see how nicely the hair extensions blend with her layered hair.

How to Wash Clip In Hair Extensions

Now that you are a proud owner of your very own set of Luxy Hair extensions, it is important to care for them properly to keep them looking luscious, smooth, and shiny for longer. If given the TLC they deserve, Luxies can last anywhere from 3-6 months, or even up to a year or longer!

Luxy Hair extensions are made with 100% Remy human hair, but since they don’t receive natural oils from the scalp like our own hair, they do not need to be washed as often as your own hair. In fact, we recommend washing your Luxies every 15-20 wears or when there is too much product buildup to the point where they become unmanageable to style.

In this blog post, we’ll give you step-by-step instructions on how to get your Luxies squeaky clean, as well as how to restore moisture and shine. Remember, the less you wash your Luxies, the longer they’ll last! Watch this quick video tutorial or scroll down for text instructions:

      Step 1: Gather your products

To wash your Luxies, you’ll need a shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask. We highly recommend using alcohol-free and sulfate-free products, as these ingredients are very harsh on the hair and can dry out the hair. Dry hair = frizzy, tangly hair and no one wants that! Organic hair products are packed with natural ingredients like proteins, essential oils, vitamins, and fruit extracts. These ingredients provide nourishment to your hair, making it healthy, beautiful, and glossy. Organic hair products may be a few extra dollars, but trust us, they’re worth it! Mimi uses the brand Rahua, while Leyla uses Amenta. Some of our other favourite brands of organic hair products include John Masters, and Intelligent Nutrients. Check out this article for more information on why we love organic hair products. Whichever shampoo you use, make sure it is moisture restoring and nourishing, to give the hair that extra goodness. For conditioners, try to use a deep conditioner that restore dryness and repairs damage.

Step 2: Fill up your sink

Plug the drain in your sink and fill it up with lukewarm water. You don’t want the water to be too hot or too cold. Just like Goldilocks would say, lukewarm water is “just right!” Next, add 2-3 dollops of shampoo into the sink and swish it around, then take your hair extensions and place them in the water. To avoid tangling, we recommend to wash your extension wefts one by one.

       How to wash hair extensions

Step 3: Shampoo your hair extensions

With your hands, gently soak your Luxies in the water to get them nice and wet. Once they are fully wet throughout, pop a few more drops of shampoo directly on the hair, and use your hands to lather the shampoo. Use a top to bottom motion, gently working the shampoo throughout the hair, and try to avoid lathering up and down, as this could create tangles in the extensions. Continue lathering up the hair for a few minutes, until the hair extensions are nice and soapy. Then, submerge the hair extensions into the water and let them soak for 2-3 minutes.

      Shampoo for hair extensions

Step 4: Rinse out each weft

Once you have let your Luxies soak, drain the sink, and rinse each weft separately under lukewarm water. Gently run your fingers through the hair from top to bottom. When the water runs clear, that means all the shampoo has washed out. Rinse and repeat with each weft.

      Step 5: Condition hair extensions

Once all the wefts are rinsed off, squirt 2-3 pumps of a deep conditioner on your hand and run the product through each weft from top to bottom, again, avoiding moving in a bottom to top motion, as this could cause tangles. You should feel the hair instantly become softer and smoother. Once you have worked the conditioner through your first weft, set it in the sick and repeat with the rest of the wefts. Then, grab all your wefts together and work the conditioner through the hair one last time. Set the extensions in the sink for at least 4-5 minutes or longer, to give the hair ample time to soak up nourishment and moisture.

      Best shampoo for extensions

Step 6: Rinse out each weft again

Once you have let your wefts sit for at least 4-5 minutes, take each weft and rinse them under lukewarm water, squeezing out the water from top to bottom. Rinse and repeat with the rest of the wefts.

Step 7: Give the hair a burst of cold water

Once your extensions are squeaky clean and all the conditioner has been rinsed out, run cold water and rinse the extensions again. Cold water helps restore shine to the hair and coats the cuticles of each strand of hair, which protects the hair as well. Then, squeeze out as much water as possible.

Step 8: Use a deep conditioning hair mask

A hair mask works wonders for reducing frizz, and re-hydrating the hair. Healthy, hydrated hair = smooth, glossy, shampoo-commercial-worthy hair! Take a generous amount of leave-in hair product and work it through the extensions from top to bottom, making sure to coat all the strands with the hair mask. Then, lay a towel on a flat surface (we usually use our beds) and lay each weft down flat.

      Human hair extensions

Alternatively, after conditioning your Luxies, we recommend to apply a deep conditioning mask and putting all the extensions into a shower cap to help seal in moisture. Leave overnight. In the morning, gently rinse and lay out on a flat surface to dry. Once dry, say hello to smooth and shiny hair extensions!

Step 9: Apply heat protectant and brush your hair extensions

While still wet, grab your favourite heat protectant spray and spray the extensions from top to bottom, for an extra layer of protection. (We recommend doing this every time you heat style your Luxies as well.) Then, take either a wide tooth comb or a wet brush, and brush the wet hair gently from bottom to top. This ensures that if there are any tangles in the hair, they are brushed out and smoothened, instead of breaking off. Brushing the hair while wet, also ensures that the hair dries flat, straight, and smooth.

      Hair extension brush

Step 10: Let the hair air-dry

We recommend using as little heat as possible on your hair extensions, to prevent damage, so we like to let our Luxies air dry. If you’re in a rush, you can blow dry your Luxies using a low heat setting.

And that’s it! If you follow these 10 simple steps when washing your extensions, your clip-in Luxy Hair extensions should last longer, and look beautiful for longer.

Washing your extensions properly isn’t the only thing that prolongs their lifespan, however. Check out this video for Mimi’s additional care tips and tricks. We also love using creative ways to style hair without heat, for healthier hair. Click here for some fun, heatless hairstyles.

3 Ways To Wear a Ponytail With Hair Extensions

Oh ponytails! Pretty sure everyone loves them…and trust us, a ponytail does NOT have to boring!

In this video hair tutorial, we will show you three different ways on how to wear a ponytail using clip in hair extensions: a sleek high ponytail, a messy ponytail, and a romantic ponytail. These styles are quick and easy to create, which makes it a perfect choice for an everyday hairstyle.

The beauty of these techniques is that you can use regular clip in hair extension wefts, without having to purchase a faux clip in ponytail. Watch the video below to learn how:

How to: High Sleek Ponytail With Extensions

      • Start off with creating a small ponytail at the crown of your head. This little ponytail will act as a secure base for clipping in the hair extensions.
      • Take a 3 clip weft and start clipping it in around the ponytail. Be sure to clip in as close to the hair elastic as possible, so that you will have space to clip in other wefts. The tighter you clip these wefts in around the hair elastic, the more comfortable it will feel.
      • Continue to clip 2 and 3 clip wefts in the same manner, around the ponytail that you’ve created.
      • For extra thickness, you can use 1 clip wefts and simply clip them onto the wefts that are already clipped into your hair.
      • Then, gather all your hair into a high ponytail and make sure that it covers the wefts. This is why it was important to clip them in tightly – the smaller the base, the easier it is to conceal it.
      • Secure the ponytail with a hair tie and smooth away any flyaways.
      • To finish off the look, take a hair strand and wrap it around the base of your ponytail. Not only will this hide the hair elastic, but will also give a very polished and unique look.

how to do a sleek high ponytail with hair extensions

How to: Quick Messy Ponytail Using Hair Extensions

      • This is probably our favorite way to wear hair extensions in a ponytail. The whole idea is to clip in the wefts in the same direction that your hair would go in naturally when put up in a ponytail.
      • Separate some hair at the front and clip in a 2 clip weft as you normally would. If you want more volume in your ponytail, you can clip in two wefts in this section.
      • Separate the hair mid-way and flip upside down. Make sure you leave enough hair at the nape of the neck to cover the wefts afterwards.
      • Continue clipping in wefts, but this time upside down. This way, when you put up your hair in a high ponytail, the clips will not pull at your roots and will feel very comfortable. This tutorial is a great visual example on how to do this technique.
      • Take out random hair pieces and baby hairs at the front to frame your face and get that messy look going.
      • Tug at the top of your hair to loosen up the ponytail.
      • Take random sections of the ponytail, and tease them. Here is a video tutorial on how to get volume and tease your hair, if you’re not sure how to do it.
      • Use hairspray to set the look (we recommend a natural hairspray – read why in this post).
      • For extra texture, scrunch the hair upwards with your hand. There you have it – a fun and super playful ponytail hairstyle!

      messy ponytail with hair extensions

How to: Romantic Ponytail With Extensions

      • For this hairstyle, you can either clip in some wefts (3 and 4 clip wefts) or the full set for extra thickness.
      • Since this ponytail sits lower on our head, clip in the wefts as you normally would. Here is a tutorial on how to clip in extensions if you’re not sure how.
      • Pull up the hair into a low ponytail. Feel free to have your hair parted whichever way you like it on you.
      • Start curling your ponytail in soft curls. Here we have a great collection of videos on different techniques of curling hair – pick your favorite!
      • Brush out the curls for a soft and romantic look. Your hairstyle is complete!

      How To Clip-In Hair Extensions

      Hello, beautiful!

If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide on how to clip in your hair extensions, you’ve come to the right place.

We have specifically created a step by step video with instructions on how to clip in Luxy Hair extensions. If this is your first time wearing hair extensions, you will find this guide especially helpful.

It’s common for a lot of girls and women to get nervous or unsure when it comes to hair extensions, because not a lot of people are familiar with them. But after reading this post and watching the video, you will see for yourself how truly easy it is to transform your hair into long, voluminous locks in just minutes, without any damage to your hair. Doesn’t that sound lovely? Let’s get started. Watch the video now, or scroll down for text instructions:

Note: Your set will come with 9 wefts if you have the 120 gram set, and 10 wefts if you have the 160 gram or 220 gram set. This particular video shows how to clip in a 160 gram Mocha Brown Luxy Hair Extensions set.

      The tools you will need:

One of the best features about Luxy Hair extensions is the super sturdy and secure clips. Each clip has a silicone grip which helps the weft to securely and tightly attach to the hair without falling out. All you have to do is click to open and click back to close.

Luxy Hair Clip In Hair Extensions Silicone Clip Weft

With clip in hair extensions, there is no commitment as there is with other types of hair extensions that are taped, bonded, or glued to the hair – you can clip them in and out whenever you like. Isn’t that nice? You can have the best of both worlds – short hair, and long hair – whenever you feel like it.

Weft #1: Start with a 3 clip weft

Start off by brushing your own hair thoroughly using a soft paddle brush to get rid of any tangles. Separate a straight thin section of hair with your finger or a comb at the nape of your neck and clip the rest of your hair away by using a hair clip.

how to clip in hair extensions

Take a 3 clip weft. Brush it out before clipping it into your hair. Start from the bottom and work your way up the weft, using a soft paddle brush.

luxy hair extensions weft soft paddle brush tangles

Measure the weft against your head to ensure its size will fit perfectly into the sectioned hair.

Measure luxy hair extensions weft to make sure it fits

Find the centre of your head and clip in the middle clip into the roots of your hair. Be sure to clip as close to the roots as possible. To make it easier and to prevent the clip from sliding down too far, try pulling that section slightly away from your scalp to have some leverage, or simply tease it to create a more secure base. Once the middle clip has been clipped in, clip the left side and then the right.

clip in hair extensions weft in middle of your head

That’s it for the first weft! The same process will apply for every weft.

Weft #2: Take a smaller 4 clip weft

Separate a straight thin section of hair above the first clipped weft, and clip the rest of the hair away with a hair clip.

Take the smaller 4 clip weft. Brush it from the bottom up to make sure there aren’t any knots. Measure the weft against the sectioned portion to make sure it will fit perfectly on your head.

Find the centre of your head and clip in the middle two clips into the roots of your hair first, and then follow by clipping in the side clips. Make sure there are no bumps in the weft by slightly stretching the weft to the sides when you’re clipping in the middle clips.

4 clip weft clip in hair extensions placement

Weft #3: Take a larger 4 clip weft

Separate a straight thin section of hair from ear to ear right above the second clipped in weft, and clip away the rest of the hair.

Take the largest 4 clip weft. Brush it out and measure it against your head to make sure it fits. Clip in the middle two clips in the middle of the sectioned hair and continue by clipping in the side clips.

If you are using the 120 gram set, simply omit this step and continue onto the next step using the second 3 clip weft.

Luxy Hair Extensions four clip weft

Weft #4: Take the other 3 clip weft

Separate a straight thin section of hair about two inches below the crown of your head and clip the rest of the hair away with a clip.

Take the second 3 clip weft. As usual, brush it out carefully and measure against your head to make sure it will fit perfectly. Find the centre of your head and clip in the middle clip into the roots of your hair first, followed by the side clips. Now, all the large wefts at the back of your head have been clipped in, and only small ones should be left.

How to clip in luxy hair extensions

The smaller wefts: 2 clip and 1 clip wefts

These are the wefts that go on the sides of your hair: there are two 2 clip wefts, and four 1 clip wefts. They will add volume on the sides and make everything blend in more seamlessly.

Separate a straight thin section of hair about two inches above the ear on the side, and clip the rest of the hair away. Take a 2 clip weft and secure it closest to your hairline first. Then secure the second clip closer to the back of your head.

Then, separate a section of hair right above the 2 clip weft and clip the rest of the hair away. Brush out two 1 clip wefts and clip them in onto a small piece of hair as close to the roots as possible, above the 2 clip weft, anywhere where you feel you need more hair.

how to clip in hair extensions

Repeat the exact same process on the other side of your head.  Brush your hair and check in the mirror to make sure that all the wefts are hidden, especially in the back. And that’s it!

      100 Layers of Extensions

      Hello my beautiful friends,

Today’s video is going to be something very different. I’m sure a lot of you have seen this tag going around – it’s sort of like a challenge video where you do “100 layers of…. “. And I’ve seen things from 100 layers of lipgloss, to a 100 layers of nail polish, to a 100 layers of hair wax… you name it, all kinds of stuff! And then I thought to myself…

Why don’t I do 100 layers of hair extensions?! And at first, I thought I for sure don’t have enough wefts, because that would mean 100 wefts of hair extensions. And then I went around the house, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I actually found even a little more than a 100 wefts.

I’ve been wearing Luxy Hair extensions for more than six years, so over time I’ve collected many sets and a lot of them are actually quite old. You’ll see different sets of extensions like 24″ Ombre Chestnut, 220g Ombre Blonde, 160g Chestnut Brown – all sets that I used to wear before.

So I’m really excited to do this and quite frankly…a little terrified, haha! Bet you haven’t seen anything like this before… Check it out!
